How to Build a Time Machine with Adrianne Lenker’s Music, Soft Animal Series #1 [Ep. 6]

Here’s what you can expect from this episode:

Have you ever been listening to a song that you’ve heard a thousand times and it suddenly feels like it’s the first time you’re hearing it? Personally, I love when that happens. It tends to bring everything into focus. Well, I recently had this experience with one of Adrianne Lenker’s songs - “Anything.” Here it is, in case you enjoy the ✨ interactive✨ experience

The song is beautiful in a slightly unfair way. It’s feels unfair because I can’t always access the level of emotion that it requires to fully enjoy it. Translation: I need to be a little bit heartbroken to feel the total rush of shivers it can send down my spine. But lucky me! I got the chance to feel the totality of this song recently after my long term relationship came to a close.

This episode is going to be about heartbreak and how it can change our relationship to the art we’re consuming and creating. But I want to give a little preface, because I know as soon as the words “break up” are thrown out there, people are tripping over themselves for the deets. To be clear - that’s not what this is. I don’t have a big, dramatic breakup story to tell 🤷🏻‍♀️. So you can go get your fix of that on The Breakup Breakdown Podcast (yes, it’s real and it’s amazing - I’m not above wanting to hear the hot goss either).

That’s just a bit of context for this episode, take it or leave it babes! But when I found myself going down an internet rabbit hole to learn more about Adrianne, I decided she was going to be the first artist I dug into in the Soft Animal Series. I’m getting into my own relationship with the song. I’ve been asking myself things like “why is this the first time I’ve really heard the lyrics to this song even though I’ve heard this song countless times?” But then I’m going in on Adrianne herself.

I have a habit of adding songs to my playlists without ever actually going in on the artist. I will often have zero idea what the singers look like, where they’re from and what influenced the music unless they’re ultra famous. But I’m already really enjoying the experiment of this series because I have a newfound connection to the music. Now, it’s not just about my connection to the music, but also my connection to the artist. Because I feel like I understand her heartbreak a little bit more, I can feel the way it connects to mine.

Anyway, we’re also diving into the idea of art as a way of remembering. We’re not trying to get trapped in nostalgia here, don’t get it twisted. But love is worth remembering, even when it hurts. If you enjoy this episode and you’re not super creeped out by my vulnerability, please leave a review? XOXO - I know it’s kind of a hassle but it will really put a fire under my 🍑 to keep pouring into this.
